Barbara Jordan enters Senate chambers

1967 - Barbara sworn in as State Senator, Austin, Texas

Senator Barbara Jordan was elected to the Texas Senate in 1966 to represent the 11th District. Ms. Jordan is the first African-American woman Senator and the first African-American since 1883 to serve in the Texas Senate. She soon became the first African-American to preside over the Texas Senate and the first African-American woman to preside over a State Senate in the United States. (Source: Harvard)
